In July 2018, University of Southern California Research Associate Kristin Zacharias, MPH led a household air pollution (HAP) assessment workshop at Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to train local investigators, staff and students on HAP study implementation procedures for the Eastern African GEOHealth Hub. The training focus areas included principles of HAP and personal exposure assessment, PM2.5 and black carbon, study design, use and maintenance of air monitoring equipment, data review and data quality assurance and quality control practices. The training included didactic sessions aimed at providing theoretical background as well as practical, hands-on training in the field. The workshop culminated with a successful pilot conducted at local homes to provide trainees with an opportunity to practice study procedures and gain valuable experience in the field.
