Drs. Kiros Berhane, Darby Jack (Columbia University, U2R Co-PIs), and Jon Samet (Colorado School of Public Health, U2R Co-I) conducted a three-day research training workshop in March 2024 in Nairobi for the GEOHealth team.

The training sessions focused on troubleshooting and additional trainings for the ongoing Children’s and Mother’s health studies in Ethiopia; exposure assessment; preparations for studies to be launched this year in Uganda; data management and analysis; manuscripts; and grants and research ethics.

Additionally, the GEOHealth executive committee members (Drs. Kiros Berhane, Darby Jack, Abera Kumie, Belay Simane, Otienoh Oguge, and Lynn Atuyambe; and Dawit Siraw) made a trip to visit the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) lab.

The team met with some of the KEMRI staff members, including the PhD students and postdocs. The center recently implemented the Clean Air Africa (CAA) project, supported by the University of Liverpool, and is working closely with the Ministries of Education, Environment, and Health. Research under CAA includes exposure assessment using UPAS and Purple Air monitors that measure ambient PM2.5, NO2, CO, and CO2. The center also provides services such as air filter weighing, device calibration, and training on air quality measurement and data management.
